Frequently Asked Questions
Below is an overview of the most frequently asked questions for a number of topics:
The Free Orchestra
The Free Orchestra offers a solid 1,5 gigabyte of free, cinematic sounds taken directly from ProjectSAM’s acclaimed line-up of libraries, ranging from orchestral string staccatos and brass clusters to symphonic percussion and dystopian sound design. Throughout 2019, we released one free instrument each month. In early 2020, we re-released The Free Orchestra, combining all instruments into one package and adding new instruments and a Kontakt Player license. In 2022, The Free Orchestra has been fully updated, featuring new sounds, new multis and a brand-new design.
- Native Instruments Native Access – This is the app you use the activate and download The Free Orchestra.
- Native Instruments Kontakt Player – This is the sampler that you load The Free Orchestra into.
More information on the installation of our libraries can be found here.
Visit The Free Orchestra product page and click the Get Now button to obtain your free license. A serial number for The Free Orchestra is now added to your ProjectSAM account. You can now download The Free Orchestra directly from your ProjectSAM account, or enter the serial number into Native Instruments’ Native Access app and download the library from there.
Yes, you need to activate The Free Orchestra using your serial number. You do this in Native Instruments’ Native Access app. You can find your serial number in your ProjectSAM account. If you don’t activate, the library will run in demo mode and will time out after some time.
No! The Free Orchestra comes with a Kontakt Player license, which means you can use the library in the free version of Kontakt, called Kontakt Player. Kontakt Player can be downloaded from the Native Instruments' Native Access app. This means you don’t need any paid software to use The Free Orchestra!
Currently, you need Kontakt (Player) version 6.5.3 or higher to load The Free Orchestra.

Loaded into Kontakt 6?
If, in your existing project, the instruments were loaded into Kontakt 6, then yes, your project will load just fine, as long as your version of Kontakt 6 is 6.5.3 or up.
Loaded into Kontakt 5?
If, in your existing project, the instruments were loaded into Kontakt 5, then no, your project will not reload the library. You will have to replace the Kontakt 5 plug-ins with Kontakt 6 and reload the instruments in there.
More information
Existing projects that include older versions of the library will still load as before as long as they were loaded into Kontakt 6. Do note that, after updating, they will require the same Kontakt version as the new 2.0 version of the library, which is 6.5.3. Instruments that were loaded into Kontakt 5 will no longer work.
The 2.0 versions of Symphobia 1, Symphobia 2, Symphobia 3: Lumina and True Strike require Kontakt or Kontakt Player 6.5.3 or higher.
No, updating won’t delete any files or presets. The old subfolders with instrument sections as well as the multis folder will remain. You are free to delete these manually.
No. Existing projects will keep using the older versions of the instruments until you manually unload and reload the All-in One NKI file inside Kontakt.
Contact support and we will help you revert back to the older version.
If you bought Symphobia 1 in the first few years, before 2011 or so, you will have the original, uncompressed audio pool (.wav) installed. Later versions of Symphobia 1 came with a new, compressed audio pool in NI’s lossless .ncw format. The new all-in-one update expects the new, compressed pool (.ncw). If you have the old one, you will get a missing content dialog. There’s two ways to fix this:
Option 1
Option 1
Do a full reinstall. The upside of this is that you also get some audio improvements that were done over the years.
Option 2
Tag the ‘allow alternative file types’ checkbox in this dialog, click Browse for folder, and locate your existing Symphobia library folder. Kontakt will then be able to find and link the audio pool. If you now save the instrument, you won’t have to do this again.
Option 2
Tag the ‘allow alternative file types’ checkbox in this dialog, click Browse for folder, and locate your existing Symphobia library folder. Kontakt will then be able to find and link the audio pool. If you now save the instrument, you won’t have to do this again.
If you are opening an existing DAW project after updating Symphobia to version 2.0 and you are getting the error “This library is not installed”, this means your Kontakt version is out of date. After updating, all Symphobia instruments, even the older versions, require the same Kontakt version as the new 2.0 instrument, which is 6.5.3. Use Native Access to update Kontakt. If the Symphobia instruments in your existing projects were loaded into Kontakt 6, they will now work again. Symphobia instruments that were loaded into Kontakt 5 will no longer work.
